A Schema.org type for marking up a news article with facts such as headline, publication date, author, and images that match the visible editorial page.
The decision and its boundary
NewsArticle is a Schema.org subtype for a news story. It describes editorial facts such as headline, datePublished, dateModified, author, image, and publisher when those facts appear on the page. It is not a label for any page that mentions current events, and it does not turn a blog post into a news publisher. Use the type that best describes the visible document and maintain its values as the article changes.
What to inspect
Read the rendered article as a visitor first. Confirm that the headline, byline, publication and modification dates, image, and publisher information are visible and internally consistent. Then inspect the rendered structured data, including the page URL and image URL. Validate a live sample after any template or CMS change, and distinguish a parsing error from a warning about optional eligibility.
A practical implementation path
Select NewsArticle only where the page reports news. Generate fields from the editorial data that also renders on the page; do not hand-copy dates into a second source. Use precise ISO dates and images that meet the presentation requirements of the publishing system. Test the final markup and keep a revision process so changes to a story update both visible content and its data graph.
Mistakes and measurement limits
A frequent mistake is choosing NewsArticle to seek a display feature for pages that are really evergreen explainers or commercial pages. Another is leaving stale dateModified values after a substantive correction. Structured data should clarify a truthful editorial record, not perform authority. A valid graph still does not guarantee a rich result or news inclusion.
Worked markup example. A newsroom publishes a report at 09:00 and corrects a material factual error at 14:00. The visible article should show an honest publication date and, where editorially appropriate, a modification date; the NewsArticle data should be generated from those same fields. The page’s headline, author, image, and canonical URL must be the facts in the graph. A generic CMS default such as the site owner as author is not an acceptable replacement for a visible editorial record.
Check criteria. After publication, inspect the rendered source rather than the editor preview. Parse the NewsArticle graph, compare every required field with the page, and check that the referenced image is accessible and appropriate for the story. Review a sample after template updates because a valid single article does not prove every category or author template is correct. Keep external news-search inclusion separate: valid structured data is one eligibility signal, not a submission or display guarantee.
Common errors. Do not mark evergreen guides, sales pages, or re-posted press material as NewsArticle simply to seek a search treatment. Do not preserve an old dateModified after a substantive update, and do not add an author that a visitor cannot identify. Schema vocabulary should describe the editorial document already published, not create a reputation signal that the page itself cannot support.
