Product Schema

In short

Product schema is structured data that describes a specific product and visible commerce facts, helping search systems interpret eligible pages without.

Product markup describes a specific visible offer

Product structured data gives search systems explicit facts about a product page. Google’s product-snippet guidance is aimed at a single product or a documented set of variants, rather than a broad category such as ‘shoes in our shop’. The markup must describe information that a visitor can see on the page.

Choose the implementation path from the offer. A product snippet may use Product with an offer, review or aggregate rating where the facts are genuine. A merchant listing has additional commerce requirements. Schema.org vocabulary is useful, but Google’s current feature documentation defines eligibility for Google Search.

The diagram maps visible page facts to the structured-data properties that describe them.

Model facts before generating JSON-LD

Identify the stable product identity, name, variant relationship, image, price, currency, availability and offer URL from the source data. Decide which fields are absent rather than inserting plausible values. A missing rating is not a reason to create an aggregate rating; a variable price is not a reason to hard-code one value.

For variants, keep the visible selection and the structured representation aligned. If each variant has a distinct URL, test the selected variant’s price, availability and canonical URL. If the page uses one URL, ensure the rendered default and markup do not contradict each other.

Test the rendered page and release path

Validate sample pages with the Rich Results Test during development, then inspect the final HTML after deployment because templates and feeds can change what is served. Check that required properties are present for the intended enhancement and that every marked value agrees with visible content.

Monitor relevant Search Console reports after release, but distinguish a validator pass from a rich-result display. Also check failures caused by out-of-stock products, feed mismatches or template changes. Save the sample URL and observation date so a later reviewer can reproduce the check.

Eligibility is not a presentation guarantee

Correct Product markup can improve eligibility and understanding; Google does not guarantee a product enhancement. Do not state that JSON-LD creates rich results, price drops or shopping visibility. Merchant Center data and on-page markup can be complementary, but neither replaces accurate public product information.

The high-risk mistake is marking up claims that are not visible or supportable—especially reviews, ratings, availability and prices. Treat structured data as a factual interface, not a decorative SEO layer.
