HowTo structured data represents visible steps in machine-readable form; it must match the page and does not promise a search feature.
HowTo markup is a structured representation of an actual task with ordered steps. It is not a shortcut for turning an arbitrary article into a search feature; the reader must be able to complete the task from visible instructions.
Practical implementation
Start with a real procedure. Break it into meaningful ordered steps, ensure names and instructions are visible, then represent only those facts in JSON-LD. Keep markup synchronized when the procedure changes. Google’s 2023 change restricted HowTo display, so justify implementation by accuracy, not predicted search cards.
What to verify
Review the published page as a reader, compare step order with the graph, and validate the final rendered implementation. Test the canonical URL; a local template preview cannot confirm what a crawler receives.
Common mistakes
Do not mark up a marketing list, a recipe with missing instructions, or a procedure whose important safety condition is hidden.
