Local SEO

In short

Local SEO makes a business’s location, services, and contact information clear and consistent for nearby searchers across its site and local listings.

Local SEO Starts With Reality

Local SEO helps nearby searchers understand whether a real business serves their location and need. It is not a method for manufacturing city pages or profile listings. The foundation is accurate, public business information: the name used in the real world, address or service area where eligible, telephone, opening information, and services that can actually be delivered.

Google’s business guidance makes accuracy and representation central. Select the correct business type, use a truthful name, and keep details current when a move, service change or closure occurs. A website, profile, and structured data should not contradict one another. A shared template with different city names is not local usefulness.

The diagram shows the main inputs, checks and decision path for Local SEO.

Control the Business Details

Start an audit with the public facts. Check the contact page, location page, profile, navigation, map or directions link where appropriate, phone formatting, opening information and the canonical URL for each real location. Define whether the business receives visitors at an address or serves an area; the page must describe that distinction clearly.

A useful location page answers practical questions: what is offered there, who is served, how to contact the business, and what constraints apply. It can include original local evidence such as access instructions or service coverage when that information is true and maintained. It should not invent testimonials, staff, addresses, review scores, or local imagery.

Build Useful Location Pages

For a multi-location organisation, give each real location a distinct record and destination. Consolidate duplicate variants, link from a clear locations hub, and ensure the page’s title, visible details and structured data agree. If an area has no real operational presence, treat it as a service-coverage question rather than a new location page.

Verify changes in a browser and through the source: details match, the page is indexable where intended, the canonical is final, and maps or contact actions work. Review Search Console by country or page group for discovery evidence, but do not promise map placement, calls, or traffic from one update.

Verify Without Inventing Signals

The common mistake is confusing mention count with local relevance. A page becomes locally useful through accurate service information and a reliable way for a person to act, not a repeated city name.

FAQ

Only where the business has a real, distinct offering to explain. Swapping town names into identical copy adds little value.
Keep the business identity, service area, address where applicable, opening hours and contact details accurate.
