Google Panda was a Google ranking-system component associated with assessing page quality; it is now understood as part of Google’s core ranking systems.
What Google Panda was
Google Panda was announced in 2011 as a system intended to help show higher-quality and more original content. Google later said that Panda became part of its core ranking systems in 2015. The name is still useful historical shorthand, but there is no current Panda setting, score, refresh calendar or recovery request to tune.
What remains relevant today
The durable lesson is page purpose. Google’s current people-first guidance asks whether a page gives readers a satisfying, useful answer and whether it was created primarily to help people rather than to attract search traffic. A content review should therefore examine the visible main content, original value, source support and whether several URLs are competing to answer the same task.
How to investigate a traffic drop
Do not label a decline “a Panda hit” from timing alone. Define the affected URLs, queries, countries, devices and period; check indexing, technical changes, seasonality, competing pages and result-page changes; then group pages by template and purpose. A manual action is a separate Google Search Console process and should not be conflated with an algorithmic visibility change.
- Identify the URLs and query groups that changed, with the comparison period recorded.
- Review a representative set for duplicate main content, unsupported claims and an unclear reader task.
- Consolidate true overlaps; rewrite pages that can serve a distinct purpose; retire pages with no defensible purpose.
- Recheck rendered pages, internal links and canonical decisions, then monitor comparable periods without claiming causality.
Common mistakes
Avoid word-count targets, mass location-page variations and treating a traffic graph as proof of one historical algorithm. A page can be technically sound yet unhelpful, while a small page can be valuable when it completes a specific task. The useful result of a quality review is a clear record of what was improved and why, not a named-algorithm verdict.
