Link mass is an informal term for links pointing to a site or page; relevance, placement and intent matter more than a raw total.
Link mass describes a backlink profile, not a search-engine metric. A count can combine editorial citations, navigation links, advertisements, scraper copies and broken references that mean very different things.
Practical implementation
Collect backlink evidence from more than one source where possible, deduplicate by referring page and domain, and sample placements rather than trusting a score column. Classify paid, user-generated, irrelevant or broken links carefully. Prioritise resources worth citing over volume.
What to verify
Open representative linking pages and record context, target, anchor and link attribute. Compare profile changes with site migrations and content launches, but retain uncertainty: tools have incomplete coverage and discovery dates are not creation dates.
Common mistakes
Do not label a profile healthy from a domain count or authority score. Do not assume every unfamiliar link is harmful.
