A search quality rater evaluates result quality under published guidelines; ratings help assess systems but do not directly rank an individual page.
What Search quality rater (assessor) means
Quality raters assess samples under detailed guidelines. Their work helps evaluate search quality at the system level; it does not mean that an individual rater approves, rejects, or manually ranks a specific ordinary page. This distinction prevents a compliance checklist from being mistaken for a ranking mechanism.
Decision rule and evidence
Use the guidelines as a review lens for user benefit, transparency and evidence, especially in high-impact topics. Do not write content to “pass a rater” or invent quality scores from visible page elements.
Practical workflow
- Identify the page’s primary audience and the decision it supports.
- Check whether the main content answers that need directly and cites appropriate evidence.
- Review authorship, ownership, contact and policy information where relevant.
- Compare the claims in the page with what a reader can verify on-page.
- Keep the review notes separate from performance data; neither proves the other.
Verification and common mistakes
A useful review preserves the URL, date, scope and concrete observations. It should say what was visible, what was missing and which judgement remains subjective.
